Functional Dry Needling is a treatment that involves the insertion of a thin needle into a muscle. The aim of this treatment is to release trigger points that our bodies create due to unstable joints or tissue damage from dysfunction.

How dry needling therapy works

During a dry needling session, the needle is inserted and removed, and the duration of the session is usually between 10-20 minutes, depending on the severity of the condition and the number of areas being treated. Electrical stimulation is often used alongside dry needling to speed up the recovery process and reduce muscle soreness.

the benefits of dry needling

Trigger points are tight knots that can be found within a muscle and may cause pain in another part of the body. They can also lead to muscle weakness, decreased range of motion, or alter our movement patterns.

Trigger points cause pain due to decreased oxygen and blood flow, which leads to a decrease in pH levels. This then activates nociceptors (pain receptors) to restore a normal baseline. To check for trigger points, you can palpate around your neck, shoulders, and hips and feel for any tender knots. If left untreated, these nodules can negatively effect our bodies.
